I know that you mention that backups are "on-site". I assume this means "stored to the same DC", correct? If so, is there any chance to add-on replication of the backup to a different DC :?:

This is speculation as I don't work for Linode, but I expect that you are limited to a backup server in the same DC so that the limitless* bandwidth of your private IP is used for backups. Data transferred between DCs has to transit the Internet, so is going to cost someone - either you or Linode.

I guess the problem is that, in the past, data centers (not Linode ones) have blown up. What's to keep a data center Linode is in from blowing up? So, I'd say we should still backup unrecoverable data between data centers ourselves, and only rely on this beta backup system for restoring the system.

Buy a second linode in another datacenter and rsync between them several times a day. Yes, it costs money, but real redundancy isn't cheap anyway.

hybinet is right, if you're looking to hedge against datacenter outages and/or explosions.

But do remember that rsync isn't a backup. It's a solution to reduce downtime. You'll probably want to use both rsync and a backup procedure.
