I upgraded from a 512 linode to 1024. Total time was probably 5-10 minutes, all automated.
Step 1: choose your new plan under Resize
Step 2: once that completes, click on each disk partition you have to then resize it. I resized my swap, then other main partition.
Step 3: boot!
