I would like to access a GUI from a Chromium laptop. I have spent the past few hours messing around with VNC and various clients and what not but I have been unable to set anything up.

How should I set up a fresh ubuntu linode so that a GUI could be accessed straight from the web?

TCP5800 is the standard WebGUI port for VNC. Just make sure your VNC server is running the web services. Then in your clients web browser put http://yourip:5800
