http://library.linode.com/networking/openvpn/ubuntu-10.10-maverick

Did everything there...

I can connect from the client machine using OpenVPN just fine, but I can't seem to load any web sites. Did I do something wrong?

Use OpenVPN Access Server (http://openvpn.net/index.php/access-server/overview.html). It's very easy to install, .deb file (use the Ubuntu 8 version), and configures directly from a config script from the terminal. It has a graphical GUI admin and user end accessible from the web. The free license gives you two simultaneous users, default authentication is PAM (i.e. your VPS login for Ubuntu).
