I'm wanting to upgrade my Centos 5.4 up to Centos 6.0 but I want the least amount of downtime on the website. I will probably evaluate Debian and Ubuntu at the same time.

Is it feasible to create a new Node, set it up over a week or two and then transfer the disk image to the main account?

The main account is a yearly subscription but I will only need a month to setup a new instance.

I could use the existing Linode but I would have to take down the site to setup the new one.

Thanks.

Chris.

There is no reason to transfer the disk to the "main" account. Just flip IPs to the new one when you're ready to go. Open a ticket with support to get the billing switched around (so that the "new" one gets the yearly billing).
