| ruby on rails is completely foreign to me and I have a site completely built on it hosted at linode.com I have requested help from 2 different programmers I have used in the past to help me change my homepage and registration page for my site and neither can figure it out. I figured this would be the best source. If you know your way around these servers backwards and forwards please contact me privately to discuss and please let me know your rate. |

I don't want to sound elitist, but this is really the level of thing you need to do yourself. If you can't do this, you won't be able to properly maintain your box (at the very least keeping up with updates), and then it will become a security risk and impact the rest of us.
There are many good tutorials on this sort of stuff, and Linode's library is a great learning resource:

The "Using linux", "beginners guide", and "getting started" sections are probably the most relevant here.
If you don't have time to learn, a VPS might not be for you; shared hosting may be more appropriate, because at that point somebody else takes care of all the technical stuff. |

There are also companies that specialize in offering managed services to VPS customers. You pay them a monthly fee, and they take care of your server. This is probably a lot better than hiring someone for a one-off server setup task, because chances are you'll need similar services again.
On a related note, Linode staff are currently running a free trial of managed services. See link below. I'm not sure if the free trial is still available, but it won't hurt to open a ticket and ask. It's free, and since it's Linode staff, they're probably more trustworthy than a random person who PMs you.
