Gidday

Thanks to help from Linode and the forum, I'm almost set up!!

Up to installing mysql. I'm using MySQL 5.522 on my current shared host, and would like to have that on my Linode. The set up is mentioned 5.1. What do I change to install the version I want?

It depends primarily on which distribution and release you're using. It's usually not worth it to override that, unless you specifically need a feature that's in a newer version.
