I'm setting up a postfix / dovecot mailserver on my linode.

I can read email on this from Thunderbird, but can't reply. Reply efforts fail on SMTP timeout.

Thunderbird is configured to use port 25, SSL/TLS, normal authentication (but I've tried none).

None of the efforts are even appearing in the logs on the server.

Any thoughts on what I'm doing wrong here?

It looks like my ISP maybe blocking port 25. I can telnet to port 25 from the linode itself, but not from my remote computer.

How do I revise configuration to connect to SMTP over the default port?

Don't have enough time to give a full answer, but look around for enabling the submission port (587) for your mailserver.
