I set up zohomail.com as a third party free email host. Although I set up my MX records here on my linode to match exactly what they require, I am not receiving email there at all.
The domain is working fine on the web hosting side.

Anyone have ideas on what to check for?

DNS Manager changes can take anywhere from 15 minutes to a few hours depending on the amount of time it takes for the TTL to expire.
