Two things that bother me:

Well the message from google suggests the users receiving the email are being flooded.

www-data means it's coming from a script from your web server. Check your web access logs and match the time stamps to see which file is sending.

Also if you give your ip and domain I can check for an open relay (or you can do it yourself here http://www.abuse.net/relay.html)

That makes sense. It's probably one of the several mailing scripts on the site. There is a lot... pretty active community. I just thought that the site was configured to send as daniel@site.com instead of www-data.

Is it good practice to switch it to use something else from www-data?

www-data is the linux user sending it, you probably have a badly configured script it should look something like this

Make sure your script is setting the correct headers for From: and Return-Path: also if you can use the sendmail -r option
