I have followed the postfix guide step by step - no love at all, just kept getting errors - so I tried citadel, that was good until I had to get it working in the browser and it doesn't accept the address.

So now I have postfix and citadel sitting on my system conflicting each other - I have tried going through postfix instructions again and I just get dovecot errors

Code:
20 11:22:49 yup spamd[400]: logger: removing stderr method
Feb 20 11:22:50 yup spamd[402]: spamd: server started on port 783/tcp (running version 3.3.1)
Feb 20 11:22:50  yup[402]: spamd: server pid: 402
Feb 20 11:22:50 yup spamd[402]: spamd: server successfully spawned child process, pid 403
Feb 20 11:22:50 yup spamd[402]: spamd: server successfully spawned child process, pid 404
Feb 20 11:22:50 yup spamd[402]: prefork: child states: II
Feb 20 11:24:08 yup citadel: Posting crash message
Feb 20 11:35:42 yup postfix/master[1096]: fatal: bind 0.0.0.0 port 25: Address already in use
Feb 20 12:09:41 yup postfix/master[1520]: fatal: bind 0.0.0.0 port 25: Address already in use
Feb 20 12:11:33 yup dovecot: dovecot: Killed with signal 15 (by pid=1567 uid=0 code=kill)
Feb 20 12:11:33 yup dovecot: Dovecot v1.2.9 starting up (core dumps disabled)
Feb 20 12:11:33 yup dovecot: auth-worker(default): mysql: Connected to 127.0.0.1 (mail)

Is this error due to adding citadel, if so how can I take it off without causing issues of my sites?

Anyone have any ideas? Looking at postfix's website is looking at a flight manual....in another language...

The error is most likely due to citadel/postfix being installed together removing one should fix it without issues.

Next question, do you really need to host your own email? Outsourcing tends to be easier on the brain.

cheers obs - I only need it for keeping my site up and running really. I've had my current e-mail for about 6 months and I have been using it a lot so I just want to get it back after my move from hostmonster.

If I can get 5 e-mails I would be happy - I don't run an organisation or anything, so minimal is ok with me.

go for google apps, last I checked they let you have 50 accounts free and I think unlimited aliases.

On mine it's 25 accounts, but I can request more. The alias do seem to be unlimited, and you can set it up to be able to send email from the aliases. After setting up some filters and labels, it's almost like having separate accounts.

It's 50 accounts and then you can request more.

Which probably means paying for the non-free version with more features. 25 must've either been an old limit or it's something in their interface for newer accounts. Not sure when you signed up for Google Apps, but my Google Apps accounts are just over 4 years old and it's been 50 accounts the entire time.

I've been using it since mid 2006 on the domain I checked. They must have upped the initial max after I signed up. A new domain I created last year, has its max at 50.

I think the default increased to 50 in early 2009. While I didn't have an apps account then, I believe that prior to that point, while the default was less, you could actually request increases above the 50 limit for the standard (free) account. Announcements about the new default of 50 mentioned grandfathering in any accounts currently above that limit. But after that point the only way to get more has been to upgrade to premium.
