I've moved all my sites from 1and1 to Linode, repointed the name servers, and I am very happy with the performance increase.

I've left my domain names on 1and1 and would like to continue to use their email servers. I've followed the instructions on
http://www.linode.com/wiki/index.php/Ge ... g_up_email
Only I've replaced the GoDaddy mail servers from the example with 1and1's using:

mx00.1and1.com priority 0
mx01.1and1.com priority 5

All mail I send to my old email addresses are now bouncing back with a "550 550 must be authenticated" error. I've waited a few hours and this is still happening. Would it take longer to fix itself?
Am I doing this correctly or have I missed a step somewhere?

Thanks in advance

That page hasn't been updated since 2009 you should check out the linode library, http://library.linode.com/email which contains official linode documentation and is kept up to date. Have a go at following whichever guide is relevant to your distribution and if you have problems post again (include your email server configuration file any any errors)

How to ask for help
1. Give details of your problem
2. Post any errors
3. Post relevant logs.
4. Don't hide details i.e. your domain, it just makes things harder
5. Be polite or you'll be eaten by a grue

Hi thank you for the reply.

I did check out the Linode Library first, and the instructions there are geared towards setting up your own email server which is why I kept searching and found the wiki. The Google Apps instructions seems to be the closest to what I am trying to do and the directions seem to be the same: create the MX records.

Maybe I just haven't waited long enough?

This is what was wrong. I had everything set right, but was impatient. Emails are now working correctly. Thanks for the help anyway!
