Technical support referred me to a HOWTO page with a most recent Ubuntu page at http://library.linode.com/email/postfix ... 0.04-lucid The HOWTO is long, has lots of moving parts, and doesn't work. (Not that I am running 12.04, not 10.04 - I picked the most recent documentation available. What is the simplest way to get email working? Does Squirrelmail do this simply? Thanks, |

Squirrelmail requires a working MTA (like Sendmail) to send email. It uses typically iMAP to receive email so you need both. Not familiar with Ubuntu so I can't help much there, but I can't imaging it is that hard. Other options are Postfix and Exim. |

What do you want to do, email-wise? Do you want to be your own Gmail, or do you simply want your system to be able to send mail out? |

The simplest way is to install postfix per the gateway guide and forward your email elsewhere, like to Gmail. A fully-functional email system requires all those moving parts set up. With just postfix your server can send email and forwarding is very simple. |
