Centos 6 with distro kernel using grub (legacy) on KVM: verbose boot

Hi,

I have a KVM Linode with Centos 6 using the Centos kernel and booting via grub legacy.

Despite having removed 'rhgb' and 'quiet' from the grub entry in grub.conf and having set 'BOOTUP=verbose' in /etc/sysconfig/init I don't get any output on the console other than the login prompt, This is the output I see on the console:

  Booting `CentOS (2.6.32-573.18.1.el6.i686)'

CentOS release 6.7 (Final)
Kernel 2.6.32-573.18.1.el6.i686 on an i686

xxxx.xxxx.xxxx login:

How do I get it to output verbose boot messages?
