I manage an account by the name of Drunkduck on your servers. I'm currently paying $160 a month for hosting and $40 a month for backups.
I would just like to ask if my site could run on the $80 a month plan? Would you be able to advise me on that? I assume you have access to historical usage records and monthly statistics.

Additionally, if I did move my Linode to a cheaper plan, would my site have to be completely recreated on a new sever or would the move be relatively painless?

Actually, Linode does not have a lot of visibility into what's happening on your server anyway. You need to get an understanding of what your performance looks like. One way of doing this is Longview, or there are numerous tools like vmstat that can generate similar data. It's likely that memory will be your greatest concern.

A 16GB Linode is quite large; depending on what applications you are running and how much traffic you get, you may very well be able to run on an 8GB or smaller Linode.

The Longview system hasn't proved very useful to me unfortunately, being inexperienced as I am the setup process has just proved too difficult.

Assuming my site would function comfortably on an 8GB Linode, would I have to rebuild it on that Linode when I changed packages, or would it just be all transferred over seamlessly?

If you are not able to set up Longview yourself, this may be an indication that you need to get someone to help administer the server.

Anyway, downgrading your Linode is simple and can be done through the Linode manager. You may need to resize your disk; search the Linode docs for advice on downgrading/resizing.

All of your data will be moved to a different, smaller Linode within the same datacenter and you will keep the same IP address. Note that your site will be down for however long it takes. You will not need to re-install anything, but you may need to tweak the configuration of some applications (database, web server) so they work properly in the smaller memory available.

If you find that a smaller Linode does not perform well, you can always upgrade back to a larger one (with corresponding downtime).
