Hello,
If you signed up after April 9, 2014 then your account is hourly and you pay AFTER for only the time your servers existed (even if it's shut down).
If your account is older than that, you'll be on the pre-pay billing method, but you can switch to Hourly Billing under your Account tab in the Linode Manager. If you stay pre-paid, you can add a server and pay for the entire month. When you remove it, you'll get a credit back for any unused time.
