 Post subject: Running Bind
PostPosted: Wed Aug 13, 2003 5:02 am
Hi

I'm very impressed with linode service and I'm not yet a costumer ( only after my vacations ) , but for what I've seen/read about, it seems to be a very, very good option.

My question is, I would like to run bind for my domain and I would like to know if 3 IP's ( 2 dns + 1 for the rest ) is a better option than 2 ip's for everything.

Is there any restrictions about it ( arin, ripe ) ?

Thanks in advance.

Nuno

Two IPs would work just fine.

The only possible "restriction" is that some registrars require your IPs to reverse back to the name of the dns server.

For example:

ns1.domain.com looks up to 10.0.0.1
ns2.domain.com looks up to 10.0.0.2

and

10.0.0.1 reverses to ns1.domain.com
10.0.0.2 reverses to ns2.domain.com

You could run hundreds of named-based websites off of either of those IPs, with all of the domains with an IP of 10.0.0.1. But, each IP can only reverse to one thing (ns1.domain.com).

Also, if you're planning on running any SSL certificates, each SSL cert requires it's own IP address.

Thanks!
