How is the traffic from the server measured? Is it all network traffic from the virtual server, or only that going to the the "outside" internet?

If I purchase two Linodes, is traffic between them counted?

All network traffic via the ethernet device counts, even if it's to/from a "local" network.

Traffic is counted if it leaves Linode's rack in each datacenter. If you have two Linodes in the same place (Dallas, Fremont, or Atlanta), traffic won't be counted between them but if the Linodes are in different datacenters then the traffic will be counted.
