I signed up for a 512 account, and changed the name server numbers for my domain name registrar to point to linode as directed in the Linode library documentation.

But my Linode account seems to come with an IP address, which I can see when I go to the Linodes tab of Linode Manager.

What is that IP address? I guess that is what I use to login to the Linux shell, but is it also used in some way for the web site I will host?

The ip address is the ip address of your linode, if you host a website on there you need to point it's DNS records to that address, you can also use that address for ssh and any other service you host on your linode.

Thanks for your reply. I've installed BlazeDS which runs on a TomCat server. Because I access the VPS using putty shell, I'm not sure how to access the test page. In a GUI environment, you would open Firefox and go to http://localhost:8400, so should I go to http://MY_LINODE_IP:8400 ?

Before my web site DNS gets propagated around the internet, can I access the VPS via that IP?

Sorry for the NOOB questions, and again, thanks very much for your responses.

Sure, if you have configured it to listen on your public IP address.

Also, I just checked and it doesn't appears that Linode is authoritative for "stardustsystems.com". In other word, nothing is going to resolved until there are DNS records for Linode to answer queries with. You did set up your domain records within the DNS Manager, right?

It doesn't look like it. Linode's nameservers are listed as being the nameservers for stardustsystems.com in the root nameservers, but they don't return any A records and they have no SOA records.

I thought I had to wait until the DNS changes at my doman registrar propagated around the internet to change the settings in Linode DNS Manager.

If I don't have to wait for the propagation, then maybe I can change in DNS manager now.

You can change/create the entries in the DNS manager now.

Okay, I've set the DNS, now I guess I have to set up virtual host in Apache. Thanks!
