I've just set up a new Debian 8 Linode and, unlike my other one, I have decided *not* to run my own DNS server and rely on Linode's instead.

Does this mean that I can safely uninstall Bind9 from my server without any side effects?

Thanks!

Yes, you may. You might want to keep the 'bind9-host' and 'dnsutils' packages installed, as they provide client utilities like host, dig, and nslookup.

You might want to keep bind9 as a caching-only DNS server, i.e. using
Code:
nameserver 127.0.0.1

in /etc/resolv.conf and putting your usual DNS servers as forwarders in /etc/bind/named.conf.options.
