I've never setup a vpn server before, and I have a question for you guys.

In the config file /etc/pptpd.conf

There are the localip and remoteip lines.

What I dont understand is this:
Do I have to configure say eth0:1 for 192.168.0.1 for the localip.
remoteip: I would assume that this is the ip that the vpn clients are assigned.

Here is what I want to do:

I want to connect to the VPN server, and use it to browse the net.

Home -> VPS PopTOP Server -> Internet

Mainly to bypass local filtering and other pointless restrictions.

And what if I wanted to create say 20 VPN accounts. Do they all use the same IP. Would it be the external IP (*public IP) or would they use one the range configured in the line remoteip.

Your help is appreciated.

Ok so for some odd reason something went wrong somewhere, when I tailed the pptpd logs it was complaining about having an invalid IP 1189.168.0.1 but when i searched the pptpd.conf file I could not find it there. Since I was testing on a VPS i just refreshed the server and started again.

And Just in case someone else has the same question as I had. The answer is quite logical if you really think about it.

Short Version: No you dont have to configure any of your nic's with certain IP ranges to work with poptop. And you wont need a DHCP server either. Poptop handles all that. So the remote and localips could be anything you wish.

Case closed.

Here is a good link for a step by step poptop howto for CentOS 5 64bit
but you can apply it to any OS really.

Setting up PopTop is just way to simple, so simple in fact that your mind refuses to accept it.
