since linode's backup service don't serve for encryptred setups, does anyone have any idea how I could go about making a backup of my xvdc drive? and then have an easy way to install it if something bad happens?
(i've emailed linode support directly first, and they suggested i ask here)
now i will patiently sit and wait for the replies...

You can back it up using any standard tools that you like. dd, rsync, cp, scp ...

I believe you could also use the Linode Backup Service if you switch to using EncFS.
