Today, I was upgrading my server from Ubuntu 13.10 to 14.04 & I had to download 100+ MB for the upgrade. And I observed 100-200 kBps speed for downloading new copy. (At max it went ~500 kBps). I never bothered about internet-speed at server side, because I know it's (supposed to be) lightening-fast. I am curious about this especially as we moved to SSD & double RAM.

I think the internet connection at my home offers faster speed than this. Am wrong reading this or am I missing something?
My server is located at Linode's Tokyo, Japan datacenter. I recently accepted the double RAM & SSD offer from Linode.

What speed do you get on your linode?
& What speed are we suppose to get (promised)?

You're pulling to a Linode in Tokyo from Ubuntu's US mirrors. So you're dealing with transoceanic cables, plus HTTP, plus a busy mirror server. You get the speeds noted on our site ( linode.com ).

Using one overloaded ubuntu repo as your speed benchmark is a little narrow.

Use a few different speed tests, and if they're all slow, submit a trouble ticket to support.

Also, from a practical standpoint, use mirrors.linode.com instead of us.archive.ubuntu.com in your sources.list. That will use a local mirror within your datacenter.

Have you considered that maybe the bottleneck is at the server's end and not at your linode's?
