Does any one have any clever tricks for automating this somehow?

Enabling Network Helper in the configuration profile will at least do the networking parts for you. It should result in a Linode with connectivity. From there, you can ssh in and adjust hostname and whatever else you need.

Instead of cloning via Linode's Manager, you can also create new Linodes from StackScripts, Salt, or Ansible as well.
