I used the distro wizard to install Ubuntu 7.10 on a new Linode. Then I attempted to install xubuntu-desktop as follows:

apt-get install xubuntu-desktop

Near the end of the install I got this error. (Searching the forum brought up this thread, but maybe I need to post elsewhere.)

FATAL: Could not load /lib/modules/2.6.23.1-linode36/modules.dep: No such file or directory
pcilib: Cannot open /proc/bus/pci
lspci: Cannot find any working access method.

How should I resolve this? thanks

Easy. There are no modules on a linode UML kernel. There never will be. Ignore any errors relating to such (or remove the things that are trying to access them).

Likewise... the hardware is virtual in a UML instance. You don't have any PCI information because there isn't any.

I know this might not be of any help you you, but I'm trying to give you some perspective for the error messages.
