I'd guess that the database information in /sites/default/settings.php is either missing or incorrect. Beyond that, you'll really need to give more information to help us troubleshoot.

Oh, and by the way, it's safe to say that this has *nothing* to do with the linode in and of itself. You may get better help with this in the Drupal support channels.
