I'm thinking of setting up a community-based site along similar lines as Slashdot. I took a look at the slashcode hardware requirements, and it really doesn't seem like a good choice for a Linode.

No specific recommendations, but you should check out http://www.opensourcecms.com/. Not a specific system, but a place
that lets you experiment with any of several of the available systems. A lot more convenient than installing them yourself.
