I'm looking to update from Ubuntu 9.10 to 10.04 LTS (Probably should have a while ago, oops ).

My kernel version is "Latest 2.6 (2.6.39.1-linode34)", which I've noticed is now marked as deprecated on Linode.

Should I change to another kernel version before running the 10.04 upgrade?

You should be running latest 3.0, on either version of Ubuntu.

Thank you! Really sorry about my slow reply here, took me a long time to get round to upgrading, but I took your advice, so thank you very much for it!

I'm looking to do the same upgrade. How did you go about changing your kernel first?

You update it in the configuration profile in the linode manager:

1) Log into the linode manager (https://manager.linode.com/)

2) Select your linode

3) Next to the currently active profile in the dashboard, which by default I think is something like "My Ubuntu 10.04 Profile", click "Edit"

4) Under "Boot Settings", select "Latest 3.0 (3.0.18-linode43)" in the Kernel dropdown

5) Save your changes. The new kernel selection will take effect the next time the linode reboots. Linode will periodically update the kernel, and all you'll have to do to take advantage of that is reboot again.

I'm not sure if the "Latest" option will get updates to later 3.x releases (3.x changed the version numbering scheme, 3.2 -> 3.3 would now be the equivalent to 2.6.2 -> 2.6.3), or if it will only get the minor releases (which tend to be security fixes).

I'm on Latest Legacy 2.6.18.8-linode22 and Ubuntu 8.04 LTS - am I ok to do the same upgrade as I want to shift LTS versions

Bit the bullet and changed to Latest 3.0 (3.0.18-linode43) and it has rebooted fine - phew!

Not for the 8.04 LTS to 10.04 LTS - any strange things I should be aware of other than is detailed here ?

It depends on what packages you have installed. My most recent upgrade went pretty fast. I'd set aside an hour or two for the upgrade itself, I guess. It's mostly automated once it gets going. Then some time for checking that everything is working after.
