Hi,
I installed Clamav on my server, and as part of the setup, I added the following line to my sources.list file:

deb http://volatile.debian.org/debian-volatile lenny/volatile main contrib non-free

However, each time do an apt-get update, it is unable to update from the volatile library.

My understanding is that as a result, my virus definitions are not being updated, and the Clamav engine is out of date.

Has anyone else got this problem? If so, how is it fixed?

Then DO NOT USE PACKAGES FROM DEBIAN. Never. Just because a baby will fit inside a microwave oven doesn't mean it's a good idea.

... so what's wrong the Clamav packages included with Ubuntu 10.04 LTS?

If using lenny/volatile is the wrong thing, you could perhaps tell me (thus making your post useful) what is the right one?

But the real issue is that my Clamav is not updating (read the bottom part of my OP).

vi /etc/apt/sources.list
#delete any line containing 'debian'

I would try this on a non-production system first, though, since it's likely there will be some configuration mishaps.

The guide I was following indicated that I need to use a Volatile repositry which contains the updates for the definitions and engine as they are released outside of the normal cycle.

Since my Ubuntu is based on debian squeeze, I figured debian lenny would be fine (obviously I was wrong). Do I need to add a new source to my sources.list file to be able to retrieve the definition/engine updates as they come out?

Use the engine supplied by the package manager. freshclam will fetch the definition updates.

In addition to not mixing package between distros (which is a recipe for disaster -- hence hoopycat's freaking out), Lenny was EoLed in February -- don't use it. Your attempts to fetch Lenny files failed because they have all been moved to the archive.

needed to be added to my sources.list file.

To control what gets updated through the backports repositry when using apt-get, view UbuntuBackports

I would like to test my install now but am not quite sure how. I've read about the "EICAR-AV-Test" file, but how do I make use of it?
My workstation here has virus protection, so it will block me from sending it. Do I turn off my virus scanner and send the file to a mail account my server as an attachment? Or is there another way of doing it via a command on my server?

Any links to a practical test guide would be appreciated?

guides on how to configure something in debian will often be okay on ubuntu (ie change this setting in this conf file), but installation? Never.
