I just ran into this error, "too many open files" after each command I did, even ls. I increased the file-max number in /proc/sys/fs but is this normal? I run Debian on the 2.4.26-linode29-1um kernel and I had to force-restart, shutdown wouldn't even work.

I don't have that much load,I think.

Any ideas?
