Hi.

I have a new CentOS VPS that I'm just starting to set up.

When I issue a 'reboot' or a 'shutdown -r' command, the VPS just shuts down.

I've never seen this on any other CentOS installation (mostly having worked with physical servers & VMware), but suspect it's something really simple. I just can't find it. I've looked thru various log files with no useful information found. I've installed all the CentOS updates.

The VPS starts fine from the Linode Dashboard.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

Hiya,

That's as designed with Linode. a Shutdown (even with reboot flags) will cause it to halt only

You can use Lassie ( http://library.linode.com/monitoring-an ... n-watchdog ) to automatically restart your linode if it shuts down via non control panel actions.

Alternatively, you can use lish or the linode API to do the reboot.

Thanks praetorian. That makes sense & works just fine.

I actually looked & searched thru the Library & Forums both before posting the question and after getting your quick & very useful reply. However, I still couldn't find any explicit reference to this design. I did see in the Documentation where it was kind of implied that Lish or the Linode control panel is how you'd boot or reboot, but nothing saying the VPS's shutdown command with a reboot flag would result in just a halt. If that document exists, I'd love to know where it is, so I could get a better feel for where to find info in the Linode Library, as I obviously don't have it figured out yet!

Thanks for your help!

I'm not personally aware of this being explicitly documented anywhere as Lassie is recommended and enabled by default.
