Are you running anything particularly complex that might break from a major version upgrade?
Before paying somebody to do this, you should try it yourself:
1) Make a snapshot of your linode, either via the backup service, or by cloning it to a new linode (linodes are pro-rated by the day, so getting a second linode for a few hours is very cheap)
2) Try following the instructions for Ubuntu to upgrade between major LTS revisions (8.04 -> 10.04 -> 12.04)
3) Validate if everything is working. If so, you don't need to hire anybody. If not, restore from your backup and then you might need to hire somebody to figure out what's going wrong.
The upgrade process is literally a "copy and paste this into your console and hit enter" kind of thing, so it's worth at least trying the basic process yourself first.
