GoDaddy:

You can not edit or delete a 'domain host' if other GoDaddy domains use that domain as a nameserver.

eg, if you are coming from a reseller account that allows you to have ns1.mydomain.com as the nameserver for mydomain.com and your resold accounts, and you have other personal domain names in you godaddy account with ns1.mydomain.com / ns2.mydomain.com listed as the namserver, you must change those namservers to something else (such as ns1.linode.com) before modifying the name host record for your primary domain.

If you don't do this, GoDaddy will not kick up any errors, and everything appears to update successfully – but nothing will stick.

It is probably the case that if third parties have ns1.mydomain.com listed as a nameserver for their domains, you will be locked-out and will be unable to update the name host record.

Usually you must change your nameservers and for me this has always been something I negotiated with godaddy because that is where I have done my DNS registration and hosting.

The guy that runs it has always seemed like douche bag. Shooting an elephant, backing SOPA, declaring Danica Patrick a super hottie… the line has got to be drawn somewhere.

I am growing and the evidence I provide is the hosting I will be doing on linode… future registrations will happen elsewhere as they have when I registered my father's domain.

Anyways, the nameservers tell the DNS servers of the world who to check with for your IP. Whoever you registered your domain with set your initial name servers. DNS whois can tell you who is dictating your name servers now if they are not with your DNS registrar. (Your registrar is the person who took your money so you could use whereever.com.)

So, now you know where your name server is. Go there. Log in. Change your A record. Increase the priority on an MX record. Go nuts-- within reason.
