Debian 6 Stable
Linode 1024

When I setup this Linode, I used 1/2 of the 40gb to build the Distro which is Debian. I wasn't sure if I was going to use multiple ones (adding an IP) or what at the time.

Now I am fairly settled and would like to add the 20gb I didn't use to the system I am using now.

I'm assuming I can do this two ways...

1) add the 20gb as another disk
2) add the 20gb by extending the existing disk.

I am leaning towards #2... but am curious what others are doing in this case.

I am assuming that if I resize the disk, when the server is rebooted, the disk will just show the extra space? or do I have to do something else?

Keeping your data on a separate disk image from the OS install can make life much easier for OS upgrades, backups, migrations, etc. It is a little more work to set up but IMHO it saves a lot of trouble later.
If you used one of the supported filesystem types (you'd know if you didn't) then the resize through the control panel should just work without any other steps. Make a backup first though if you have any important data on the partition - nothing in this world works 100%.

Backups are my middle name... learned my lessons years ago...

I decided to just resize the disk instead of adding another disk.

I was successful doing this, but had a hitch when I first tried.

I had run a snapshot backup before the process...

I shutdown the linode, and then edited the disk size to max and issued the command.

It Failed... with the error: lv_resize: Image is currently snapshotted

I found that the snapshot was still being spooled to storage. I tried again about 5 mins later and it was successful.
