I name my servers after ED drugs.

First server: viagra
Second server: levitra
Current server: cialis

I figure, hey, I want it to stay up, right?

I've named my servers after famous people in science. And yes, I'm quite a science fan (as well as a science-fiction fan).

Linode 1: edison
Linode 2: newton
Dedicated server: nansen

The last one is located downtown from my physical location (Ålesund, Norway).

My personal server at home doesn't follow that naming scheme, though. That one's called "gammern" ("gammer'n" is slang for "old guy" in Norwegian), more or less because it's an old one (AMD K6 233 Mhz, 160MB RAM, 6GB HDD, and it's still able to run Gentoo Linux).

I've had a number of machine names over the years... currently:

godzilla - a mongo fileserver with 4x120GB RAID5 and 2x120GB RAID1

wibble - a Shuttle SK41G cube

roadwarrior (only when running Windows) - a ThinkPad T22 (it just gets a random DHCP address when running Linux)

jake, elwood, and bluelou - xenU instances when wibble is running Xen

skynet - a Linksys WRT54G running Sveasoft Satori in bridge mode, hooked to a D-Link DI-514 connected to a cantenna that shoots a signal through a couple of buildings over to a coffee shop that I go to, so I can take the laptop there

The cantenna was made from a Glenfarclas Scotch whisky tin. :) That's right, for the price of the commercially made "Super Cantenna," you can get a DIY version that comes with a free bottle of very good Scotch.

Another cantenna, made from a ravioli can, gets hooked to the laptop for coffee shop use...

If you think your machines might last a real long time, name them:

cheops, giza, sphinx, 7wonders

If your theme is eventual world domination, perhaps:

pinky, thebrain, microsoft, grandpoobah

If your theme is number-crunching to answer the universe's greatest mysteries:

seti, et, 42

If you think these are sexy machines, then:

jenna, ron, peter, debbie

If you've got a pretty secure network, then:

moat, gatekeeper, drawbridge, mace

In the case of a nice MacOS X-based laptop, I might go for eyecandy as the hostname. :-)

Ah, the possibilities are endless. :D

I take it you're not particulary fond of Apple?
