There's a problem with the RAID unit on this machine. We're working on a resolution and will update shortly.

Today, at approximately 11:30AM Eastern, dallas158 suffered a permanent data failure. We regret to announce that all data on dallas158 has been lost.

As you should already be aware, Linode does not provide backups of customer data. We do employ RAID to protect against hard drive failures, but in this case the host suffered a controller, backplane, or other hardware failure that resulted in unit corruption and data loss, despite our efforts to resurrect the RAID unit on good hardware.

We have recreated all accounts that were located on dallas158 on a new server which utilizes RAID 10 instead of RAID 1 -- and although this doesn't mitigate the loss of user data, the future performance of your Linode's disk IO will be vastly superior.

We understand that this is an inconvenience and therefore will be applying a credit of two month's service to these accounts. We'll be contacting those affected through our ticketing system shortly.

Please feel free to contact us with any questions you may have.

-Chris

Caker: All Data lost, that's scary!

Was any customer seriously crippled by this?

use the search feature of the forum

this thread for example lists a couple of ways how to backup your data to a s3 account.

There's even a wiki on that too:

None of us should have been crippled. We knew what we were getting ourselves into if we didn't have backups. I did have backups unfortunately I forgot to ensure file ownership when I copied the data last... lame mistake on my fault.

Either way, no major set back in reality, just a real big annoyance.
