Just noticed this beta forum (which sounds cool).

Im wondering if you are planning to move away from UML towards Zen for virtual services or is this an additional service that you plan to roll out?

Also, what would be the pros and cons of using UML vs Zen?

Xen has been kinda dead for a while, waiting for it to stabilize wrt PAE I think. Besides the one 'test' box (which I'm enjoying) I think it's the only Linode host running Xen.

One, if not the main, reason I joined Linode was because after having looked around other Xen-based hosting, I noticed that they had plenty of customers complaining in their forums.
Linode has been great so far with a UML-based hosting, and I sure wouldn't want to have problems just because Linode wants to adopt a "cooler" hosting technology.

There is no mad rush to 'cooler' hosting technology. Linode has moved from having one test Xenode host to having test hosts at each of its three data centers. Migrations to those hosts are on hold pending resolution of some bugs, one critical.

UML based Linodes are equipped with a mechanism to prevent a runaway/malicious Linode from using all the host I/O bandwidth. AFAIK, this has yet to be implemented for Xenodes and is regarded as essential for production machines.

Linode is probably the biggest UML cluster on the planet and they work closely with Jeff Dike, the creator of UML. VT/Pacifica support is coming to UML, so Xen's speed advantage should be reduced.

While other technologies will get tested, my guess is that there will be UML at Linode for the foreseeable future.
