Hi there,
A suggestion:

I'm following https://www.linode.com/docs/platform/di ... -over-ssh/
The suggested command to copy disk over internet is 'ssh root@123.45.67.89 "dd if=/dev/sda " | dd of=/home/archive/linode.img'

I imagine a lot of users works behind a slow internet connection (myself e.g.). The process above can be painfully slow. Considering gzip is available under Lish, for a much better speed (up to 30%), still with a cool niceness level, why not update information there to something like:

'ssh root@123.45.67.89 "dd if=/dev/sda bs=1M | gzip -1 - " | dd of=linode.img.gz'

This is the right place for suggestions like this?

Thanks
Rodrigo

Definitely the right place, thank you for writing out this recommendation! It adds a step or two (zipping and unzipping), but in the amount of time saved it could be worth its salt. I'll bring this over to the appropriate team.

It might be simpler instead to suggest the -C option to ssh on slower links, which causes it to use gzip compression when transferring data. This would not involve adding another utility to the pipeline, and the saved image file on the local machine would be uncompressed.
