Hey everyone,

First time poster, but I wanted to share something that happened to me as a user, and an idea that may prevent it from happening to others in the future.

I built my first linode using a stack script the other night, specifically the LAMP stack script that's been deployed 17K times. I got all of the configuration done, but couldn't fix the dovecot system due to a missing package. After hours of research, and much help from the IRC group - discovered that the stack script deployed Ubuntu 10.04 (wayyy out of date).

Now I have to rebuild and reconfigure a new server and go through all the processes again.

My recommendation is that for stack scripts to have the architecture and version in the first sentence of the description:

Ubuntu 10.04 | x_64 - Etc..

What are your thoughts on this idea?

Mike

You have to pick the distro you're going to deploy yourself. Each StackScript announces versions that its author says it works on, but the decision in the UI is on you, just as if you didn't use a StackScript.

Enforcing standards on StackScript authors would be super difficult, partly because getting them to respond after the fact is pretty difficult. All the source for public StackScripts is readable on the site, so you're way better off looking at what they actually do and/or learning by following guides and docs.

This. The StackScript you chose also had the option to deploy Ubuntu 12.04 LTS, but I can definitely see room for improvement in how we display StackScripts and the distros they're compatible with, so I'll be sure to pass this on to our team for consideration. :)

Thanks JCurry - Thought it might be helpful to others -- if nothing else listing that BE CAREFUL with stack scripts.

When I saw it advertised as a Linode Feature, I assumed (I know, I know) that it was a maintained and monitored feature, not a community supported benefit.

May prevent future frustrations - that's how I like to roll - help where I can.
