You should really display a warning that you terminate DNS services on an account if you're not running an active Linode.

I spent a fair amount of time troubleshooting this before I eventually figured out what was going on.

The requirement that you have an active Linode is mentioned in the documentation:

As far as adding some sort of warning in the manager, I imagine Linode can only implement a fraction of the feature requests they receive from users. How do you think they should prioritize a feature request that primarily benefits people who are no longer paying customers?

I'm not in a position to test this right now, but I do recall it throwing a warning and requiring confirmation before you delete the last Linode on your account, at least via the web interface.
