AHCI is much faster, and supported in current operating systems (Vista an up for Windows.)

The virtual AHCI controller can be attached also while still using the PIIX qemu device model.

Maybe keep a legacy option for those who wont let go of their Windows 3.1 or NT4 ;-)

Did some quick fio read only random 4k read benchmarks on non-linode KVM rig, attached to some crazy ~450,000 iops NVMe storage.
Volume completely written before testing.

on host 450k iops
virtio-blk 180k iops (linode paravirt default)
virtio-scsi 30k iops
ahci 21k iops
piix 2.4k iops (linode full virt default)

So yeah, AHCI emulation *is* faster than PIIX emulation for sure :wink:
