I am using linode and I am fairly happy with it (I'm Polish), so I am not 100% sure whether I'd migrate - always some work to do (although if there were European locatons when I was subscribing, I'd surely pick one)

Still, the problem is more important in case of prospect users.
I wrote some positive note about Linode on my Polish blog, and recommended Linode on some forums, and too far away was a main concern people used to raise...

YES!
I would open an european account

I have a question
if I open an account today... and choose an US datacenter.... Would I be able to move the account to an european datacenter if it is available in the future?

At the present time, migrations between datacenters are entirely possible with only a change in IP address. However, the expansion of the universe between now and that unspecified future time may result in unforeseen limitations. Since this thread is deeply theoretical as it is, perhaps we'll capture a passing physicist who can answer this question more fully.

Even though I'm not a physicist but an Aerospace Engineer, I have to say that the expansion of the universe doesn't really interfere with the possibility to move your data over the ocean to another datacenter. There is however a chance that the Post Glacial Rebound going on at the moment puts cables in such high tension that they fail, this could give problems due to loss of internet connection between Europe and the States.

This could be solved by using the air to transmit the data. If this will be needed I can warmly recommend a Homing pigeon. With burst speeds of approx. 95 km/h they'll be able to transmit all zero's and one's printed on paper in little time.

---

Seriously now: Moving datacenters will be possible, in the worst case you can always create an extra account for a month and then cancell your old account. Won't be needed for me though, I get perfect connection speeds to the Newark datacenter from Holland, and my highly optimized Lighttpd setup hads never really slowed down to something less acceptable.

I suspect that when Linode offers a European data center, it will not be the Post-Glacial Rebound that stretches the cables, but the expansion that occurs as Hell freezes over.
