I've just deployed an additional Debian linode and noticed I chewed through an awful lot of traffic just running apt-get for everything. Could we get local (as in private network or just in the same DC) mirrors for Debian, Ubunto, CentOS, whatever?

Currently updates are costing Linode bandwidth (if you use less than your quota), costing users bandwidth (if you use more than your quota) and most importantly costing distributions bandwidth for every update or deployment.

Not to mention, it would be nice to pull updates from the wicked-fast local network instead of the mostly-fast 'net.

Got one in Dallas for Slackware:

I would imagine that this is how it would need to be done for other distros/data centers as well...

I might be able to set one up over the weekend, I only have a 2nd tier linode though. No heavy services running, though :) (It would be for Dallas)

Code:
Get Packages and Sources files and other miscellany.
Parse Packages and Sources files and add to the file list everything therein.
Download all files that we need to get (13033 MiB).

Hmm, I think we'd be forever indebted to anyone with 13GB+ free disk space in the Newark, Atlanta, or Freemont data centers. Since freedom_is_chaos already set one up in Dallas.

That would be nice, but I'm willing to bet most folks are like me and don't have that much space to spare.

Maybe a chip-in system from the people who would like to use it would help such a project come to fruition?

I could volunteer my time and administration skills to such a project. If linode would give me the allocatable work environment for such. I don't have the money to go bust out servers in 4 DCs with large enough space for this. I'd really love to do this though. :)
