From the "Why Linode" Page:

Quote:
Our Facilities and Hardware

We offer five world-class, geographically diverse data center facilities for you to choose from:

* London, GB, UK
* Newark, NJ, USA
* Atlanta, GA, USA
* Dallas, TX, USA
* Fremont, CA, USA

The full name of that country is "United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland". Great Britain is the name of the larger island -- the sum of England, Scotland, and Wales. So, in a sense, GB might be treated as a region of UK. But the relationship between GB and UK is far from analogous to that between, say, TX and USA. Most people would say either GB or UK, but not both at the same time.

So, would you prefer 'London, GB, European Union', or 'London, UK, European Union'?

The UK does not have states or provinces. They have 'counties' as the administrative divisions... About 50 of them. London is a borough, which is almost like a county itself. London is surrounded by the counties of Kent, Surrey, Middlesex, Hertfordshire and Essex.

Why not "London, England, UK" or "London, UK"?

I think hybinet has got a point.

This is the same as saying Newark, America, USA, for example.
It really should be like London, Greater London, GB

Um, actually I was just looking for "London, UK".

Not every country is big enough to need a state/province/county/etc. appended to every location's name. How many Londons do you think there are? Wikipedia lists eight in America, one in Canada, one in Kiribati, but only one in the UK.

Also, UK is a sovereign state, so you shouldn't be putting EU or anything else after it. You guys really should stop thinking in America-sized units. (Let's hope everyone knows the general whereabouts of UK...)

The US states are sovereign states too, in theory, and used to be in practice. Not anymore though. That's the future of the UK and the EU, so get used to it...
