Hi guys,

It would be real nice to be able to run a live "recovery distro". One that is super small, does *NOT* need to be installed, and has the latest tools so that we can best fix filesystems and such, without having to take the dangers of attempting to boot with them.

My vote goes out LNX-BBC or Damn Small Linux for such a "live recovery distro". Both are highly generic (a good thing), non-intrusive, have updated software, and are tiny enough to run for us Linode64 people.

Thanks

Bill Clinton

PS: Some of you guys might suggest distros like Knoppix, or Mandrake Move for a live recovery distro. However none of these distros are generic, non-intrusive, nor are they tiny. (Duh, these distros aim for different usage)

Just grab a root image and dd it to a small volume. Then boot from the volume. If it's small enough, you might even be able to make it an initrd. What else do you need to accomplish this?

He's just suggesting that they make a generic one available to everyone that can be used in the event of an emergency without any previous thought on the matter. E.g. they suggest installing a secondary distribution and using that to reset your root password if you have to...but if there was a 'recovery' boot option that was always available, that kind of thing wouldn't be necessary.

Another note: this idea has been brought up before.
