Hi,

It would be useful to be able to see the default TTL for each domain on the DNS manager page. I'm migrating datacenters and so it would be useful to get a summary of the default TTL for each domain on the main page.

Thanks,

Dan Scott

I'm using linode's nameservers on mine, and I have my settings on "default" ... so the result for nslookup will likely be something like this for you:

Code:
nslookup -type=soa SOMETHING-YOU-HOST-AT-LINODE.COM ns1.linode.com

Quote:
retry = 14400 (4 hours)
expire = 1209600 (14 days)
default TTL = 86400 (1 day)

you can override these settings on linode DNS manager (edit your SOA record)

... I hope this helps?

Hi,

I know that I can see them and edit them. I'm just saying that it would be useful to display the value on the overview page. So that I can quickly see if I have changed all of my domains to have a short TTL before I make a change.

Dan

http://www.linode.com/api/dns <--- Seems it's already supported in the API... but I guess you wanted specific display options when using the default (linode-provided) web interface?

I would also like to see what the "Default" value is more clearly stated in the DNS Manager.

There's also a note about "Changes made to a master zone will take effect in our nameservers every quarter hour." Does that mean it could be up to 15 minutes before any changes go live, regardless of what the TTL values are?

Yes it does but only for changes in the manager, slave zones are updated immediately.

Changes through the Manager and API are equally affected as well as changes to the definition of slave zones (ie, creation of zone/change of master/removal of zone/...). Slave zone contents are updated immediately, though (normal AXFR/IXFR triggerable with notify).

It's also worth noting that nothing at all has happened until the quarter hour mark has been passed, so for changes to appear it'll be "up to 15 minutes" + "up to <TTL> seconds".

Doesn't really matterâ„¢

Way too many things these days ignore TTL settings.

It used to be the domain owner actually controlled how long that name resolution was in effect, now everything between the domain owners setup and the path it takes to the end user is up for grabs on if they'll cache/ignore/change the TTL for that domain entry.
