I'm trying to create wildcard DNS records using the DNS manage. Anything, whether an A record or CNAME record reports "Invalid hostname '*.dev'"

Is this at all possible or if not, can it be? Or if not, is there a good reason this is not enabled?

If you are trying to create the wildcard hostname *.dev.domain.com, you will need to add a new domain zone named dev.domain.com and add a wildcard * A or CNAME record in that new zone.
