Here is a graph of my load average. I switched to the 2.6 kernel on Thursday night. No other changes to the configuration, except a resize of a filesystem.

Sorry that this isn't very definite of an answer, but I think with NPTL threads are displayed differently in things like ps, so that could account for loadavgs appearing larger.

Ok. I know that this is subjective, but in the end I suppose that's what matters -- my users (who didn't know about the kernel change) complained about slowness as well. I saw that you posted a new 2.6 kernel recently, I might give that a shot and see what happens.
