Hi,

How can I see the load average on the host? My VPS is very slow, several minutes trying to connect to it and to host9.

The VPS had a load average of 4, but I don't think that had the system crawling. In a ps aux there wasn't any process using more than 0.0 CPU.

When I finished typing this, everything returned to normal. The question is, what is happening? I don't run any rare software, just Apache, Postfix, SSH, POP3 and IMAP.

I believe there are two issues:

One is a Linode on host9 that's swapping (at certain times) very badly. The second issue is that the 2.4.23 kernel that Host9 (and 10) run on still have I/O problems, although not as bad as 2.4.22. Perhaps tuning will solve the problem (rather than a problem in code). My "special" 2.4.21 host kernel that runs on many of the other machines doesn't seem to have this problem. So, if moving this Linode off this machine (upgrade) and tuning the I/O schedular doesn't fix it, we can go back to the 2.4.21 kernel on the host.

as i write this (11:39am, US Eastern) host7 seems to be extremely unresponsive.

i can't even connect to my console, as ssh times out:
debug1: Authentication succeeded (password).
debug1: channel 0: new [client-session]
debug1: Entering interactive session.
debug1: channel_free: channel 0: client-session, nchannels 1
Read from remote host host7.linode.com: Connection reset by peer
Connection to host7.linode.com closed.

i'm still waiting on the results from uptime and free, issued 6 minutes ago, but i'm assuming it's the host since ssh console is connecting so slowly.

aha, herer it is.

Code:
[orion@thor(~)] uptime
 11:40:31 up 8 days, 21:42,  4 users,  load average: 6.94, 6.01, 3.51

edit:
it seems to be back to normal around 11:55AM.

edit: scratch that. the load avg is back above 2, two minutes later

The machine seems barely useable to me. I can barely even execute any diagnostic commands.

I'll give it a few more minutes and then issue a reboot (the friendly kind) and get it back to the 2.4.21 kernel.

Host7 has been rebooted back to my 2.4.21-host17 kernel. All the Linodes are (coming) back online.

So now (11/07/03) the main kernel of host7.linode.com is 2.4.21-host17 kernel. Is this right? Is there any problem with kernel 2.4.22 with host7. If so I will consider kernel 2.4.21 for my VDS in host7.
