Use the reverse-DNS feature on the main page of the members section.

Are you reffering to when you're IP is being logged/resolved by a service (IE: your hostname on IRC) or to the values returned by your system? If you're reffering to the first one then you need to setup a reverse DNS on those IPs. This can be done using this tool. Simply set an A record which resolves to your IP and with the tool above you'll be able to set the reverse. If you're reffering to the values returned in a shell by the system, try hostname YOUR_HOSTNAME and domainname YOUR_DOMAINNAME as root.

No match was found (68.xxx.xxx.x). Reverse DNS must have a matching forward entry for one of your IP

I am using free DNS for my ircd servers could this be the problem.

Ok so if whatever hostname you want to resolve, if for example you'd like machine.fubar.com to appear, then you need to go in the DNS server that manages the furbar.com domain and make sure there's an entry for machine.furbar.com which resolves to the IP of your linode. Once that's done, use the reverse DNS tool that I linked too earlier.

Maybe this will help - Slacker.Ath.Cx has address 64.62.190.113
113.190.62.64.in-addr.arpa domain name pointer li3-113.members.linode.com.

Free Dns slacker.ath.cx is pointed to my linode ip 64.62.190.113 and when i /dns 64.62.190.113 it still comes out li3-113.members.linode.com.

I tried reverse my dsl ip to the linode ip and wouldn't resolve(showing brains doing this).

Then i tried entering my linode ip on reverse and it would resolve to that, should i say yes to that when it comes up.

I want to hide this or change it to my choice: li3-113.members.linode.com = example irc.cool.com or even just a ip.

Once you have your hostname resolving to your Linode's IP, go on the reverse DNS tool and enter the hostname. The system will notice that the hostname resolves to one of your Linode's IP and will ask you if you'd like to set that as the new reverse of the IP. Accept the setting and within 6 hrs, the change will have started propagating. I might be wrong in this figure, but it might take up to 3 - 4 days for the propagation to be completed.

I go to www.zoneedit.com, create an account, set my nameservers
to them, and add a domain.

Then I assign IP addresses to the hosts in that domain using their
IP address manager.

Then I go to linode.com's members area, the reverse dns config
section, and enter the hostnames I've assigned to my linode.com
IP addresses there. It offers to set the rdns to them, and I click yes.

Give it 6 hours to update, and hey presto, it works :)
